How to Add a 4 GB Memory Card to a Samsung SCH-i760

Last month I purchased a 4 GB microSD memory card for my Samsung SCH-i760.  After struggling to get the card out of its packaging, and promptly losing the SD adapter, I inserted the card into my phone and thought I was good to go.

This past weekend, my phone told me it didn't have enough space to allow me to take a photo.   Declaring the phone to be stupid, I went into Settings - System - Memory, clicked on the Storage Card tab, and was surprised to see "Total storage card memory: Not installed".  Scratching my head, I did some research and discovered that the Samsung SCH-i760 will only recognize 2 GB cards.  To use a 4 GB card would require a hack.

Armed with the hack I found here: Samsung SCH-i760  > 4GB microSD HC,  these are the steps I took to enable the card (sorry for spelling this out in nitty-gritty detail, but maybe it will help someone like me who isn't completely up-to-speed on how these things work):

  1. Placed the .cab file into the SCH-i760 My Documents folder on my laptop
  2. Plugged the Data Link Cable into the phone and the USB port on my laptop
  3. ActiveSync automatically started, bringing the .cab file down to my phone
  4. Used File Explorer on the phone to locate the .cab file
  5. Clicked on it which made it run
  6. Gave me a security warning, and I opted to proceed

When done, it told me the device needed to restart to complete the installation, and I said OK.  The device restarted itself, and when it came back, I again checked the memory settings and lo and behold, it told me "Total storage card memory: 3878.50 MB".  Woohoo!

How generous of you to post the "easy" instructions. Worked like a charm -- and I couldn't have done it without you.

I am buying an i-760 next week, and I have a feeling that this will rock.

Terri Morton,

Thanks for your help, I would have gone out and bought a 2 gig card had I not found your site. It took me 10 minutes to follow your directions and I now have a 4 gig card working. Thanks so much.

Terri, forgive the off-topic comment, but comments are closed on the post I would have replied to. :-) Regarding the GPS and your SCH-i760, you can use an external Bluetooth GPS. I'm using the Freedom Keychain with mine and it works great. The GPS is the size of an automobile keyless entry gizmo, so it sits on my keychain ready for when I need it. Not as convenient as a built-in GPS, but it does the job. The only thing tricky is the Bluetooth setup for the GPS - give me a shout if you get one of these and need any setup tips.

For me all six steps went seamlessly. However, after opting to proceed at the security warning I received a message which read: "Installation of Data1.cab was unsuccessful".

Any suggestions as to how I should proceed to troubleshoot and correct this error.

ALOHA!

once you install the new WM6.1 update you are able to use 8Gb cards aswell. no need for hack, rom, or cad file. it is still being checked that the new update also allows the use of 16 and 32Gb cards.

Work great!! The only little problem I had was ActiveSync didn't copy over the .cab file. I had to copy and paste and you get a warning message that file may need to be converted by ActiveSync but don't worry just go head and paste worded fine.

Thanks great instructions.

I performed the Windows Mobile 6.1 update a couple of days ago, and as Chris pointed out in July 2008, my 4GB microSD card is now natively supported. w00t!

I have a 1gb card for my i760 and have experienced the same problem. Do you know where I could find a hack for the 1gb card or would the 4gb hack work just the same? Or would the windows update fix the issue all together? If so, where could I download the update? Thanks so much.

Sorry, HippieRod, I have no idea how to make a 1 GB card work; I suspect it won't. Regardless, you should be running the most current version of Windows Mobile to try to keep yourself as safe and as trouble-free as possible. I started out on the Samsung site for the update: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa/jsp/faqs/faqs_view.jsp?SITE_ID=22&PG_ID=557&PROD_SUB_ID=561&PROD_ID=833&AT_ID=133263. I was sure to read everything and follow all of the links before starting.
